How Does Premature Withdrawal of Fixed Deposit Affect Interest ?

Premature Closure Charges

To discourage people from closing their FD before maturity, there is a penalty fee. Most financial institutions and NBFCs take resonable charges and rate of interest on premature withdrawals of FD. These could range anywhere between 0.55-1% of the fixed deposit amount.

Lock-In Period

In most cases the minimum lock-in period for a fixed deposit is 3 months. There are penalty slabs as per premature withdrawal cases such as death. 

• 0-3 months – fixed deposit cannot be withdrawn
• 3-6 months – no interest is payable on the deposit but only on principal
• >6 months - interest payable is 2% lesser than the interest rate applicable for the period for which the deposit is. In case no interest is specified for the period run, interest payable will be 3% lesser than the lowest rate at which the lender accepts deposits. For eg., Bajaj Finserv.

Process to Claim Fixed Deposit by Nominee

In case of death nominee needs to fill up a form and request encashment of fixed deposit at the branch.

In case of joint account, produce the death certificate of the deceased with signature of heirsto get the Fixed Deposit credited in the joint account holder’s name.

In other case, legal representative must produce Succession Certificate/ Letter of Administration / Probate of the Will of the deceased depositor.
