Essential Guide on How to Link Aadhaar Card to PAN Card Online

A permanent account number (PAN) is given to Indian citizens. A PAN is a unique 10-character code, which links all taxable financial transactions under a single source, making it easier for the government to keep track of said transactions.

An Aadhaar card, on the other hand, is a 12-digit number, which is issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UDAI) to the Indian citizens, which serves as proof of identity, as well as the individual’s address proof. The card also contains the individual’s biometric and demographic information, thus acting as their personal identification card.

The Indian government recently announced that it is now mandatory to link one’s PAN card with their Aadhaar card, for income tax returns to be processed. There are various methods to do so; individuals can either do it online or through SMS.

To link both cards online, one has to visit the income tax e-filing website, enter their PAN and Aadhaar card numbers in the form, and enter their name as mentioned in the Aadhaar card.

If their birth year is mentioned on the Aadhaar card, only then do they have to tick the box, after which they need to enter the captcha code, followed by clicking on the “Link Aadhaar” button. Upon successfully linking Aadhaar card to PAN card, a message pops up confirming the same.

If the process isn’t successful, it might be due to a mismatch in details. In case the name is spelt incorrectly, or the details are wrong on the PAN card, individuals have to visit the NSDL website and make the changes.
